Individual membership is open to ADR professionals who wish to demonstrate their expertise and commitment to excellence in the field, professionals seeking to expand their knowledge and engage in ongoing professional development, and people with a general interest in ADR. Arbitration or mediation experience is not required to apply for membership – all persons enter as Associate Members. All Associate and Referral members of BCAMI are automatically members of the ADR Institute of Canada Inc., provided membership dues are maintained in good standing.

Full Member status requires proven experience and successful completion of training. An interview and skill-assessment role play with the Regional Chartered Arbitrator Accreditation Committee (RCAAC) or the Regional Chartered Mediator Accreditation Committee (RCMAC) may be required.

To join the Institute, return the membership application form with the entrance fee and membership dues of $324.45 ($220+ $89 + GST). All fees are refunded if the application is not approved.

Membership classifications

(a) ASSOCIATE MEMBER – a person or organization/corporation represented by a nominee that has an interest in ADR/Participatory Justice but does not qualify for any other class of membership and has been approved as an Associate Member. An Associate Member has all the privileges of membership including right to vote and hold elective office.

(b) FULL MEMBER – a person who has successfully completed the Society's requirements for education, training and practical experience and has been approved to Full Membership.

(c) LIFE MEMBER – Member who has provided, in the opinion of the Board of Directors, distinguished service to the Society and the field of ADR/Participatory Justice. A Life Member has all the rights and privileges of membership without having to pay membership dues.

(d) RETIRED MEMBER – a person who does not engage in the practice of ADR/Participatory Justice for compensation, and has given the Institute an undertaking not to engage in such practice. A Retired Member has all the rights and privileges of membership except that he/she may not represent himself/herself as accepting ADR/Participatory Justice engagements for a fee.

At any time, provided the criteria is met and the appropriate fee is paid:

  • Associate Members can apply for Member/Referral status.
  • Members and Associates can apply for C.Arb. and/or C.Med designations, and also for Non-practicing status.
